Physiotherapist Anita Baaki has provided a formal account regarding the death of her colleague, Mary Habila. Habila, a nurse stationed at the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences and currently seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works, died during an official trip. Baaki submitted her testimony through a sworn affidavit at the Ebonyi State High Court.
The pair had traveled from Abuja to Ebonyi on June 24, 2026, alongside other ministry staff to assist Minister of Works David Umahi. They stayed in staff quarters located within the minister’s Uburu property. Baaki noted that she last saw Habila on June 26 following a visit to a hair salon. After briefly visiting Baaki’s room to display her new hairstyle, Habila mentioned she was exhausted and intended to bathe and retire for the night.
Baaki grew concerned the next morning when Habila failed to emerge and did not answer her phone. After knocking without success, she notified domestic staff. When a search proved futile, they forced the door open and discovered Habila unconscious on the floor. She was rushed to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead.
This testimony was provided voluntarily to aid the ongoing police inquiry. Legal representatives for the Minister of Works have requested a forensic autopsy to identify the cause of death prior to funeral arrangements.
