The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an inquiry into Euro Car Parks to determine if charging motorists who wait in queues at petrol stations is equitable. This investigation also examines the company’s internal appeals process to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws.
This move is part of a broader effort by the CMA to address questionable conduct by private parking firms. Data from the RAC indicates that annual parking tickets have surged to 14.4 million over the last six years. Drivers have frequently reported issues such as defective payment equipment, unreliable mobile applications, and confusing signage.
Emma Cochrane, the CMA’s executive director of consumer protection, stated that receiving unexpected fines causes significant stress for individuals managing tight budgets. She emphasized that operators must provide consistent, transparent appeals processes and adhere strictly to legal standards or face formal enforcement.
The specific review of Euro Car Parks, which operates over 3,000 locations, will look at fees charged during fuel queuing and car wash usage. This fact-finding phase is expected to conclude in early 2027.
