US and Iran escalate military conflict with mutual strikes

Renewed hostilities between Washington and Tehran have led to reciprocal air strikes, as US forces target Iranian military sites while Tehran attacks installations in neighboring Gulf states.

Military tensions have escalated as the United States and Iran continue to launch air strikes against one another while diplomatic efforts remain frozen. Iran has conducted operations against US military installations located in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. These actions mark the sixth day of renewed combat, effectively undermining attempts to finalize a ceasefire.

The US military stated that it carried out a six-hour operation targeting Iranian command centers, coastal surveillance infrastructure, and air defense batteries. These strikes, spanning locations such as the port city of Bandar Abbas and Greater Tunb Island, were intended to reduce Iran’s capacity to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, US forces intercepted and disabled a Curacao-flagged oil tanker identified as attempting to reach a blockaded Iranian port.

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Tehran, suggesting that failure to return to the negotiating table could result in further military intervention, including potential attacks on energy infrastructure. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the chief negotiator for Iran, countered by stating that the nation has no incentive to uphold agreements that do not serve its interests, emphasizing that their regional security strategy in the Strait of Hormuz remains a priority.

Reports from Iranian state media confirm that air defense systems were activated in Tehran as explosions were heard throughout the city. Meanwhile, regional allies reported significant activity, with Kuwaiti forces intercepting drones and Bahraini authorities advising citizens to seek shelter. The Iranian military also claimed responsibility for striking US fuel storage and communications equipment situated in Jordan.
