Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State believes the launch of a new Nigerian Navy base will significantly improve monitoring and reduce crime across the state’s river networks. He discussed this on Monday during a meeting at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo with a delegation from the Naval Headquarters, headed by Rear Admiral Jonathan Joseph Nwunuji Mamman.
Kefas praised the leadership of the Nigerian Navy for their focus on national defense and their willingness to increase their footprint in Taraba. A site assessment has already been finished, and the governor views the facility as a necessary step to protect local borders. Specifically, the Kashimbila Waterway acts as a frontier between Taraba and Cameroon, making it susceptible to illegal activity without consistent oversight.
Beyond crime prevention, the governor suggested that the base could help train locals to assist security forces. He also called for better cooperation between all state security services. Rear Admiral Mamman confirmed that the team visited to survey the Kashimbila area, citing the location’s importance due to the nearby hydroelectric project, airport facilities, and proximity to the international border. He noted that securing these routes is essential for protecting national assets.
