Public affairs expert Abdullahi Muhammad has formally requested that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf prohibit mass assemblies within the region. He believes this step is vital to prevent political instability as the 2027 general elections approach.
In a Tuesday statement, Muhammad emphasized the need for secure campaigning methods. He highlighted that an increase in violence involving gangs, known locally as ‘yan daba, poses a grave risk to citizens and the overall electoral framework. According to Muhammad, political aspirations must not result in civilian harm or intimidation.
The analyst demanded accountability for politicians who finance and utilize these violent groups. This appeal arrives as tensions climb in Kano. Notably, Governor Yusuf recently switched from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision reportedly created friction with his mentor, former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is currently the vice-presidential nominee for the New Nigeria Democratic Party alongside presidential candidate Peter Obi.
