In Abakaliki, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, issued a strong warning to beneficiaries of his scholarship program to avoid involvement in cultism, prostitution, and other harmful behaviors. He emphasized the importance of staying committed to their academic goals.
Representing the Ebonyi North Senatorial District, the senator distributed N100 million in financial aid to 930 undergraduate and postgraduate students through his foundation. The project is designed to help students from low-income backgrounds stay in school.
Nwebonyi noted that his effort aligns with the educational goals of Governor Francis Nwifuru, who has actively supported over 1,000 students in advanced degree programs. The senator increased the scholarship recipient count from 500 to 930 to broaden the impact of his initiative.
Reflecting on his own journey as a lawyer and politician, Nwebonyi urged students to prioritize their studies over distractions, expressing hope that they would become the future leaders of the nation.
Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, represented the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, at the event. She praised the senator for his investment in human capital, stating that such actions foster youth empowerment and support the government’s broader mission for educational excellence.
