The Nigerian Senate has formally rebuked Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for requesting a United Nations inquiry into the kidnapping of students and staff in the Oriire Local Government Area. Lawmakers urged the governor to refrain from diminishing the severity of such a distressing event. This response followed Governor Makinde’s statewide broadcast on Monday, where he suggested that the abduction required international scrutiny beyond domestic capabilities, just hours after the military returned the victims following their 56-day captivity.
In a motion led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and supported by the entire chamber, the Senate praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, service chiefs, and security personnel for their bravery in the rescue operation. The lawmakers held a minute of silence to honor Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, who lost their lives during the mission. They urged the federal government to ensure all pension, insurance, and welfare benefits are promptly paid to the families of these deceased officers.
Furthermore, the Senate commended the actions of Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain for his heroic conduct and called for him to receive superior medical care. The upper legislative body encouraged the federal government to bolster the military’s operational capacity with advanced surveillance technology and modern equipment to suppress criminal elements nationwide. Finally, the Senate called upon the public to support security efforts through cooperation and the provision of intelligence.
