The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has formally refuted accusations regarding financial wrongdoing, economic sabotage, and the targeting of dissenting staff members. These allegations, which circulated on social media, suggested that State Commandant Geraldine Abetianbe was involved in monetary corruption and had damaged professional ties with other security services.
SC Friday Ekerete, the command’s spokesperson, labeled these claims as entirely false and malicious during a Tuesday briefing. Regarding a staff welfare scheme, Ekerete clarified that the program predated Commandant Abetianbe’s arrival in December 2025. He explained that the initiative was expanded following a unanimous agreement among personnel during a muster parade, with an executive committee elected to manage it. When some employees voiced objections, the command immediately issued refunds and terminated the program.
Addressing concerns about the delayed deployment of drones and specialized operational technology, Ekerete stated that these assets remain under procedural hold. Personnel are awaiting specialized training from National Headquarters experts to ensure the equipment is handled correctly and securely, adhering to established corps policies. Regarding claims of bias in staff appointments, the spokesperson emphasized that the NSCDC operates under the federal character principle. He pointed out that several key leadership roles within the state command are currently held by qualified personnel from Akwa Ibom, chosen purely for their merit and professional experience. Ekerete also reiterated that the command maintains a strong, collaborative, and professional working relationship with all other security agencies operating in the state.
