Xabi Alonso credits timing for his move to Chelsea instead of Liverpool

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso clarifies that his decision to join the club over Liverpool was based on timing, as he prepares to lead the team after their 10th-place finish.

Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, recently addressed why he chose to take the helm at Stamford Bridge rather than his former club, Liverpool. Speaking to the press during his introductory week, the 44-year-old explained that the decision primarily came down to the timing of events. While he enjoyed a storied career at Anfield, he emphasized his excitement for the significant challenge now ahead of him at Chelsea.

Alonso is taking over a squad that finished 10th last season and failed to qualify for European competition. Unlike the previous two coaches who were designated as head coaches, Alonso holds the official title of manager. He stated that he intends to collaborate closely with the club’s sporting directors on recruitment and squad development to ensure they build a competitive team. Despite the constraints following their disappointing season, Alonso expressed optimism about the current roster, specifically highlighting star player Cole Palmer’s positive attitude during training.

This appointment marks the latest shift under ownership group BlueCo, as the club seeks to stabilize after a tumultuous period. Alonso, who previously led Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, remains focused on fostering a collective approach to decision-making to drive future success at the club.
