Matt Fitzpatrick believes that the rise of sports betting is directly fueling the personal abuse directed toward professional golfers. The 2022 US Open winner claims that nearly every pro has received hostile messages linked to wagering outcomes. Fitzpatrick notes that simply searching for a player’s name on social media platforms like X reveals a pattern of persistent harassment, especially when a competitor underperforms.
Beyond online toxicity, Fitzpatrick highlights the potential for physical interference, noting how easily a spectator could disrupt a match by shouting during a backswing or putt. While monitoring such incidents is difficult, he maintains that the issue is becoming increasingly severe. This concern follows his own experiences with hostile crowds, including at the Ryder Cup and the Players Championship.
In response to growing behavioral concerns, the R&A has implemented a new code of conduct, known as The Open Commitment, for the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The policy encourages respectful behavior, warning that spectators who commit serious or repeated violations may be ejected from the venue without a refund. Local golfer Tommy Fleetwood acknowledged the challenge of maintaining competitive atmospheres while ensuring crowd decorum, noting that while fan energy is vital, the line between enthusiastic support and inappropriate conduct is sometimes tested.
