Buratai Remembers Muhammadu Buhari as a Leader of Integrity One Year Post-Passing

Former Chief of Army Staff and ex-ambassador to Benin, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (retd.), has honored the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting his disciplined leadership. Buratai noted that Buhari’s political commitment was vital in revitalizing the military’s operations against Boko Haram.

Marking one year since the former President’s death, Buratai praised his bravery and steadfast belief in the Armed Forces, which proved instrumental in securing victories in the North-East. Reflecting on his 2015 appointment, Buratai shared that he received a direct mandate to dismantle the insurgency and protect Nigeria’s borders. He emphasized that Buhari provided the necessary strategic support that allowed the military to retake occupied territories.

Buratai highlighted that Buhari’s command was defined by strict discipline and trust in professional soldiers. He noted that while observers might debate his policies, those who served under his administration witnessed his unwavering support for the military. He allowed commanders the autonomy to lead while maintaining strict accountability.

The former Army Chief described the battle against insurgency as a defining challenge in Nigeria’s history. He credited Buhari’s leadership and personal values for the progress made during that period. Beyond military strategy, Buratai spoke of Buhari’s modest lifestyle, noting that the leader shunned extravagance and retired quietly to Daura. He concluded by calling on Nigerians to embrace the late President’s legacy of honesty and service, while praying for his peaceful repose.
