Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential aspirant for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has denounced the recent spate of violent deaths in Plateau and Benue states. He asserted that true national progress remains unattainable as long as citizens are killed by violence.
Sharing his thoughts on X this past Monday, the former Anambra State governor highlighted recent tragedies, including the loss of at least 16 individuals in Benue’s Otukpo-Nobi area and the murder of nine family members, including an infant, in Plateau’s Riyom Local Government Area. He characterized these events as distressing evidence of the ongoing insecurity plaguing various regions.
Obi emphasized that many families have suffered immensely, with farmers forced to flee their lands and entire communities disrupted by continuous threats. He argued that the government must prioritize the protection of its citizens, moving past standard condemnations toward a proactive security strategy focused on intelligence and accountability.
Concluding his remarks, Obi called for the identification and prosecution of the perpetrators. He offered his sympathies to the victims’ families, stressing that the restoration of peace and security is a human necessity that transcends political divides.
