Aisha Yesufu, a political activist, has publicly argued that Nigerian students ought to be exempt from paying fees for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO). She maintains that access to high-quality education is a fundamental right for every child in the nation.
This statement arrives in the wake of a Federal Government decision to raise examination costs. According to a memorandum dated June 18, 2026, and signed by Adeniji Ibrahim, the Director of Senior Secondary Education, the fee for the Senior Secondary Certification Examination (SSCE) will increase to N50,000 per candidate beginning in 2027.
Addressing the development on X, Yesufu emphasized that the state benefits more from an educated populace than the individuals themselves. She warned that the societal price of having uneducated citizens is far too great for the country to bear, reinforcing her stance that financial barriers should not hinder academic attainment.
