England has summoned scrum-half Raffi Quirke to the national squad for the upcoming Nations Championship encounter with Argentina scheduled for next Saturday. Quirke, who recently transitioned from Sale Sharks to the Newcastle Red Bulls, steps in for Alex Mitchell after the latter suffered a hamstring injury during England’s 73-8 victory over Fiji in Liverpool.
This is not the first time the 24-year-old has covered for Mitchell; he also took his place during this year’s Six Nations tournament due to a similar injury setback. Quirke currently holds two international caps, having made history in 2021 as the youngest English scrum-half to debut in over nine decades. Additionally, he participated in a warm-up match for an England XV against a France XV last month. Head coach Steve Borthwick is also considering Jack van Poortvliet of Leicester and Ben Spencer of Bath for the position ahead of the final summer Test at Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades.
