Eric Adams Becomes First Sitting NYC Mayor Indicted Following Federal Corruption Investigation
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by a grand jury in connection with a federal investigation.
This historic indictment, the first for a sitting mayor, is expected to be unsealed today, September 26, by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, as reported by the New York Post.
Sources indicate that Adams plans to surrender to authorities early next week.
While specifics about the charges are unclear, unverified reports suggest they involve allegations that the Turkish government illegally funneled money into his campaign in exchange for approval of the Turkish consulate in Manhattan.
Additionally, sources have indicated that he may face charges for acting as an unregistered foreign agent after receiving donations from foreign entities.
“I always knew that if I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target — and a target I became,” Adams said in a statement to The Post.
“If I am charged, I am innocent, and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
In a subsequent video statement, Adams asserted that he would not resign and vowed to “fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
“I will request an immediate trial so that New Yorkers can hear the truth. New Yorkers know my story. They know where I come from. I have been fighting injustice my entire life,” he continued.
“That fight has continued as your mayor. Despite our pleas, when the federal government did nothing as its broken immigration policies overloaded our shelter system with no relief, I put the people of New York before party and politics.”
Reports indicate that at least three others are also anticipated to face charges.
