Nigerian military reveals details of Oyo school kidnapping rescue mission

The Nigerian military provides details on a multi-agency operation that led to the safe rescue of 44 students and teachers kidnapped in Oyo State.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has shared details regarding the successful recovery of kidnapped students and teachers from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, representing the 2 Division Army Public Relations, stated that the operation was the outcome of strategic, intelligence-led maneuvers.

On July 10, 2026, forces led by Major General CR Nnebeife of the 2 Division Nigerian Army coordinated with a broad coalition. This effort included the National Counter Terrorism Center, Defence Headquarters, Special Forces from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, alongside the Nigeria Police, DSS, NIA, Civil Defence, and local groups like Amotekun and hunters.

The mission resulted in the rescue of 44 individuals who had been held captive since May 15, 2026. Military teams spent over a month tracking terrorist leadership, dismantling logistics, and targeting hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park Forest. Authorities conducted multiple arrests across the country, creating enough pressure to force the unconditional release of the hostages. While the operation successfully secured the safe return of the captives, the military acknowledged that some security personnel lost their lives during the engagement.

The rescued victims are presently receiving medical care at an undisclosed facility and will soon be returned to the Oyo State government for reunification with their families.
