Four Die, Ten Injured Following Renewed Herder Assaults in Benue State

Four people were killed and ten were injured after armed herders attacked residents and farmers across Kwande, Benue State, over a two-day period.

Armed individuals believed to be herders launched a series of assaults over two days in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in four fatalities and ten injuries. The violence began on Thursday afternoon when attackers targeted farmers in the Anyiase region of Moon Council Ward. Two farmers, Asongo Nagwebe and Tarzan Agbahegh, were killed during the initial ambush, while ten others suffered gunshot wounds. Among those injured, one individual later passed away while being transported to Makurdi for specialized medical intervention.

The hostility persisted into Friday morning as assailants intercepted a commercial vehicle at Ikyogen Junction, firing upon residents attempting to escape the area. This second attack resulted in another death, while survivors managed to flee into the surrounding wilderness. Terzungwe Ajir, a local elder who survived the violence, reported that these events have caused widespread terror and displacement within the community. Efforts to reach Kwande Local Government Chairman Vitalis Neji and Benue State Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet for comments on the incident were unsuccessful.
