A severe three-day rainstorm in Calabar resulted in a deadly house collapse on Friday night, claiming the lives of a father and his four children. The incident occurred in the Ikot Anwatim area of Ikot Ansa, a northern suburb of the city. Local witnesses described the scene as harrowing, with community members working to recover the victims from the debris throughout the following morning.
Persistent rainfall has caused widespread flooding across multiple sectors of the city, including Mayne Avenue, Palm Street, Uwanse, 8Miles, and the Murtala Mohammed Highway. Residents have noted the unusual intensity of this year’s weather, with many expressing fear that the rising waters could easily sweep away pedestrians and vehicles.
The ongoing deluge has severely disrupted daily life and commerce, effectively silencing the city’s nightlife. Motorists have largely avoided driving, citing the significant danger posed by the flooded streets. Local Daniel Osum remarked that residents are reluctant to venture out, as there is no guarantee of reaching their intended destinations safely during the current flooding.
