For over ten years, Jim Beabubari Marshall served as a lift operator at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headquarters. While colleagues saw him only as the man operating the elevator, he secretly harbored a deep ambition to practice law. On Tuesday, that long-held dream reached a milestone as NDDC Chairman, Chiedu Ebie, attended Marshall’s Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja as his sole guest.
Marshall, a native of Rivers State, balanced his physically and mentally demanding work at the commission with full-time legal studies at Rivers State University. His daily schedule was intense, often starting at 6:30 a.m. and ending late into the night. He maintained strict self-discipline, limiting his social interactions to focus entirely on his academics.
The path to becoming a lawyer hit a hurdle when financial challenges threatened his ability to attend the Nigerian Law School. Everything changed when Marshall initiated a conversation with Chiedu Ebie inside the elevator. After verifying Marshall’s credentials, Ebie committed to supporting his education, a move that eventually led to Marshall passing his final exams and being called to the bar on July 7, 2026.
Ebie praised the achievement, noting that Marshall’s resilience has now made him a professional colleague. The chairman announced that Marshall will transition from a contract lift operator to a full-time legal position within the NDDC. Marshall hopes his story serves as a reminder that persistence and the willingness of leaders to look beyond job descriptions can unlock incredible human potential.
