The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has initiated the partial removal of illegal buildings located near the Barracks Bus Stop in the Surulere district. This action was confirmed on Friday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa.
Officials stated that the operation was the result of the property owners’ failure to address multiple formal warnings regarding non-compliance with building standards. The structures were found to be in direct violation of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law. Specifically, the buildings had breached set-back requirements, obstructing areas intended for emergency access and general safety. Furthermore, the developers could not provide the necessary legal permits for the project.
Because the construction endangered neighboring properties and the local environment, the agency moved forward with the demolition after the owners repeatedly ignored correction notices. LASBCA emphasized that this enforcement is a routine part of its responsibility to maintain safety and orderly growth across the state. The agency issued a strong reminder to all developers to secure official permits before starting work and warned that those ignoring regulations will face penalties. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious or unsafe construction projects to assist the agency in its mission.
