The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has formally requested that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) release Professor Bello Abubakar. Abubakar, who serves as the personal physician to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, was taken into custody by the ICPC on Wednesday due to allegations regarding false statements.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, issued a statement on Friday characterizing the detention as unfair and contrary to international standards. He emphasized that medical professionals typically hold a respected status globally. Akintola expressed significant concern that the physician could be pressured to violate medical ethics by disclosing confidential information about his patient.
The organization firmly asserts that the doctor’s actions did not justify an arrest. Akintola labeled the commission’s move as arbitrary and a departure from democratic principles, ultimately calling for Abubakar’s immediate and unconditional freedom.
