Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has highlighted several critical factors driving the persistent security issues across Nigeria. During a lecture at the Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja, the governor stated that systemic problems such as poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, and weak institutional frameworks are the primary catalysts for the nation’s instability.
Reflecting on recent years, Governor Alia noted that Nigeria has grappled with significant threats, including the Boko Haram insurgency, various forms of banditry, kidnapping, and recurring clashes between farmers and herders. These events have caused widespread loss of life and property damage, elevating national security to a top priority.
The governor proposed that strengthening the public service and reinforcing government institutions are essential steps to mitigate these risks. He argued that a robust public sector is vital for delivering services that stabilize communities and encourage economic growth.
Furthermore, Alia advocated for an educational shift, emphasizing that quality and accessible schooling can serve as a long-term solution to insecurity. He suggested that by promoting technical skills and fostering an environment of tolerance, the government can address the root causes of extremism and social unrest more effectively than relying solely on military force or aggressive rhetoric.
