Bus Driver Detained After Stabbing Couple Over Bar Tab in Lagos

A 40-year-old driver has been remanded in Lagos after allegedly stabbing a couple and causing significant property damage during a dispute over an unpaid N75,000 bar bill.

Kabiru Olajide, a 40-year-old bus driver, is being held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre following a court appearance at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos. He faces charges related to a violent dispute on May 10, 2026, at a bar in Ibeju-Lekki owned by Chimezie and Kate Okpoechi.

Authorities report that the conflict started when Olajide and his group refused to pay a N75,000 bill for drinks consumed during a birthday celebration. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which the defendant allegedly stabbed the owners with a broken bottle. Furthermore, the group is accused of causing approximately N5 million in property damage, including destroying the windshield of a Toyota RAV4, before escaping.

Following a directive from AIG Olohundare Moshood Jimoh of Zone 2 Command, police tracked Olajide to a location in Ibeju-Lekki. While he has been apprehended, other suspects involved in the incident remain at large. During his arraignment, Prosecutor Reuben Solomon detailed five charges, including assault and breach of public peace, under the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.

Olajide entered a plea of not guilty. Magistrate T.O. Abayomi set his bail at N500,000 with two sureties. The defendant will remain in custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until he meets the bail requirements, with the next court date scheduled for July 17, 2026.
