Senator Natasha Warns Against Politicizing State Police

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan warns that state police must have constitutional safeguards to prevent political abuse and requires sustainable funding to be effective.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has advised that state-run police forces must not be used to harass citizens or political rivals. During a security conference in Abuja hosted by Arise News and ThisDay, she stressed that the National Assembly must incorporate strict constitutional protections into any legislation that creates such departments. While acknowledging the growing momentum for decentralized policing, she emphasized that the structure must prevent local abuses.

The legislator stated that policing must prioritize public service, democratic protection, and adherence to the law rather than serving as a tool for executive intimidation. Financial stability is also a critical concern for the Senator. She noted that without a sustainable funding model, state police would fail to meet their duties. She argued that budget plans must explicitly cover training, intelligence capabilities, equipment, and staff welfare.

During the event, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan praised President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police for their quick reactions to security challenges, noting that such leadership improves public trust. The conference, which included government officials, security leaders, and academics, aimed to evaluate the best frameworks for implementing state-level policing while ensuring accountability and the protection of civil rights.
