Enugu High Court Charges Imposter Car Dealer with N15.4 Million Fraud

Chukwuebuka Ogbonna is facing trial at the Enugu State High Court for allegedly defrauding a customer of N15.4 million under the guise of importing vehicles.

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against Chukwuebuka Ogbonna. He appeared before Justice Vincent C. Ezeugwu at the Enugu State High Court to face four counts related to the theft of N15,400,000 via conversion. These actions allegedly violate Section 342 of the Enugu State Criminal Code Law and are punishable under Section 353 (1) of the same statute.

Upon hearing the charges, Ogbonna entered a plea of not guilty. Rotimi Ajobiewe, representing the EFCC, requested a trial date and asked for the defendant to be held by the Nigerian Correctional Service. The judge adjourned the case until July 16, 2026, to address the bail application, and ordered the defendant to be held at an EFCC facility in the interim.

The investigation began after a petitioner reported paying Ogbonna N15.4 million in October 2023 to secure the importation of three vehicles. Although the defendant committed to delivering the cars by December 25, 2023, he failed to fulfill the agreement and refused to provide a refund.
