Toddler perishes in Calabar flash flood

A one-year-old girl died after heavy rainfall flooded her family’s home in Calabar, Cross River State, prompting residents to demand better infrastructure to prevent future disasters.

A one-year-old child lost her life after a severe storm caused flooding in a Calabar residence on Thursday. The deluge started around 2 a.m., submerging houses near Mayne Avenue in the Calabar South Local Government Area.

As the family slept, water rapidly filled their apartment. Witness Victoria Otu reported that the water reached neck height before the parents could react, leaving them unable to rescue their daughter. Residents faced widespread destruction, with many reporting the loss of essential documents, clothing, and household goods. Businessman Emmanuel Effiong noted the loss of over 2,000 empty crates, which has severely impacted his operations.

The storm also compromised local infrastructure. Broken drainage channels and damaged roads now present significant hazards to the public. Community members are calling on both the Cross River State and Calabar South local governments to prioritize the repair of drainage systems and roads to avert future tragedies.
