Jersey Legislation for Assisted Dying Receives Royal Assent

Jersey’s assisted dying law has gained Royal Assent, allowing the government to finalize preparations for a 2027 service launch.

Jersey has officially moved forward with its assisted dying framework after the legislation received Royal Assent. This milestone follows the island’s government approval of the bill in February 2026, clearing the path for the service to launch as scheduled next year.

The government reported that preparations are well underway, with the recruitment process for essential staff already in progress. Health and Social Services Minister Tom Binet expressed satisfaction with the development, emphasizing that the focus has now shifted entirely to the operational implementation of the service. He noted that although the subject is emotionally complex, the government remains committed to meeting its established deadlines.

The legislation is expected to be formalized following its registration at the Royal Court in the near future. Local advocate Lorna Pirozzolo, who championed the law while living with an incurable breast cancer diagnosis, expressed deep relief regarding the decision. She highlighted that this change will prevent terminally ill individuals from enduring severe physical suffering during their final stages of life and noted the power of public political engagement.
