Asiya El-Rufai, spouse of the former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has requested that President Bola Tinubu protect her husband’s constitutional rights during his ongoing trial. During an ARISE NEWS interview, she clarified that the family is not asking to stop the legal proceedings against him. Instead, they are pushing for equitable treatment under the law, which includes proper medical access, legal counsel, and the ability to post bail.
The controversy stems from allegations regarding the interception of communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, combined with concerns about Nasir El-Rufai’s health and the recent detention of his long-term physician, Professor Bello. Asiya noted that despite her husband’s previous compliance with EFCC bail conditions, he now faces nearly impossible bail terms, such as the requirement for two sureties of N200 million each and an attestation from the Kaduna State Traditional Council.
Addressing claims that her husband might flee, Asiya questioned the logic, noting his past history of appearing for every court session after being granted bail by the EFCC. She expressed concern that political interference might be influencing the agencies opposing his release. Furthermore, she criticized the government for limiting his access to medical care and arresting his doctor, arguing that weaponizing healthcare in this manner sets a dangerous precedent for professionals in Nigeria.
