Akwa Ibom Governor Awards N310 Million to Youths for Boycotting #EndBadGovernance Protest

On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno announced a significant reward of N310 million to the leadership of youth organizations across the state’s 31 local government areas. This reward was given in recognition of their decision to boycott the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.

Governor Eno made this announcement during a thank-you rally held at Uyo Township Stadium. He had previously urged a diverse group of stakeholders—including youth groups, students, and market associations—not to participate in the nationwide protest that occurred from August 1 to 10, 2024.

During the rally, Governor Eno explained that each local government area would receive N10 million from the total amount. He instructed that the funds should be distributed equitably across party lines.

He addressed the gathering, stating:

“The leadership of the youths in each LGA will receive the money and distribute it across party lines. We cannot leave you in the same state we found you. We are pleased that you heeded our plea not to join the protest—not because we don’t believe in protests or are indifferent to the current issues.

We understand that there are always individuals who hijack peaceful protests to damage government facilities and vent their anger. Our leaders have worked diligently for the past 37 years to build this infrastructure, and a moment of anger can destroy all this hard work.

We are not ashamed to commend your efforts, and we are here to offer our gratitude. Although you did not protest, we heard your concerns loud and clear. We are aware of the issues causing you distress. We recognize the challenges such as hunger, unemployment, and the high cost of food. We will endeavor to address these within the resources available in our state.”

This move reflects the governor’s attempt to acknowledge and reward the youth leaders’ decision while addressing their concerns about various socioeconomic issues in the state.
