The Nigerian presidency has dismissed claims by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigerian Democratic Congress, regarding alleged threats to his life. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, refuted these accusations on Wednesday via a social media post.
Onanuga’s statement followed a viral interview in which Obi suggested the Tinubu administration was targeting him, citing an airport parking incident as evidence and expressing concern that he might not survive until the 2027 general elections. The presidential aide characterized these claims as misleading, arguing that Obi was merely blaming the government for his own violations of airport protocols.
The administration rejected the notion that it is monitoring or threatening the former Anambra governor. Onanuga asserted that Obi is attempting to manipulate public opinion through propaganda to hide his own political credibility issues. He further noted that the government remains committed to economic reforms and has no interest in interfering with Obi or his business interests, such as Fidelity Bank.
Ultimately, the presidency maintains that it is too occupied with national development to engage with what it describes as Obi’s self-serving and unsubstantiated narratives.
