Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has expressed concerns that the introduction of state police forces could lead to disastrous consequences if not carefully organized. While acknowledging the potential benefits of the initiative, he highlighted the risks involved.
During a town hall event in Abuja, Musa suggested that state police could serve as a highly effective security solution if managed correctly. However, he warned that poor implementation might create a crisis akin to a catastrophic event. He emphasized that for the system to work, it must remain free from religious, ethnic, or elitist influences.
The Minister proposed a phased rollout, beginning with state capitals, to better grasp the operational dynamics before nationwide adoption. He also expressed support for the existing Federal police, noting their performance despite challenging circumstances. Ultimately, Musa stressed that meaningful change requires individual responsibility from all citizens, rather than merely expecting others to adjust.
