Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has yet to formalize a contract extension with the Nigeria Football Federation. BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji confirmed that while talks are ongoing, the signature is missing.
This delay comes as the NFF faces pressure from other African nations and North African clubs attempting to lure the Franco-Malian tactician away. Shehu Dikko, the National Sports Commission chairman, previously claimed an agreement was in place, which reportedly included a pay raise, provisions for support staff, and oversight of the U23 Olympic squad.
Since taking the reins in January 2025, Chelle has experienced a turbulent tenure, including a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations but also failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With his current deal running until January 2027, the federation is working quickly to lock him into a long-term commitment before the 2027 AFCON qualification cycle begins.
