Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo successfully implemented a total lockdown to facilitate a state-wide drainage and gutter cleaning initiative. Citizens widely observed the four-hour mandate, which ran from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. Participants engaged enthusiastically in the cleanup efforts to improve local sanitation.
Authorities monitored the streets, and security forces detained motorists who disregarded the temporary travel restrictions. Controversy emerged when police impounded vehicles transporting newspapers from Asaba to Onitsha, despite Governor Soludo previously exempting essential workers, such as journalists and medical personnel, from the lockdown restrictions.
Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, praised the event’s overall success. He indicated that the government intends to schedule similar cleaning exercises regularly to eliminate debris and promote better public health throughout the region.
