The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has verified that a group of Nigerian women previously held in custody in Mauritius have been set free and are traveling to Nairobi. This update follows a wave of public anxiety triggered by an Instagram video posted by user #Queenbethia, which claimed the women had been stuck at the Mauritius Airport since July 31, 2026.
In an official statement, NiDCOM’s Digital Media Unit confirmed the release. The commission’s leader, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is coordinating with the Nigerian Embassy to address the situation through diplomatic channels. This involvement is aimed at ensuring accountability and preventing future incidents of this nature. The commission highlighted this action as part of its ongoing mandate to protect citizens abroad under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Despite confirming their release, the agency did not disclose the identities of the women, the specific reasons for their initial detention, or their projected travel timeline. The government remains focused on ensuring the safety of its citizens globally.
