President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a public plea for restraint as fans prepare for Mexico’s upcoming World Cup match against England. The warning follows the loss of four lives during festivities marking the team’s earlier victory against Ecuador. During a morning address, the president advised citizens to steer clear of excessive drinking and high-density gatherings to prevent further incidents.
The previous tragedy took place near the Paseo de la Reforma, where a massive crowd of approximately one million supporters had assembled. Authorities confirmed that three individuals—a 44-year-old man and two women, aged 19 and 48—perished due to asphyxiation caused by crowd crushing. The president emphasized that alcohol consumption often exacerbates safety issues and contributes to localized violence.
As Mexico prepares to face England in the Round of 16, officials are coordinating to enhance security measures. The government aims to prevent a repeat of the fatalities seen after the team qualified for the knockout stage.
