The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ekiti State has requested that the government and local residents collaborate on urgent strategies to mitigate flooding risks. This demand follows recent intense storms that caused property damage and street flooding in Ado-Ekiti and neighboring areas.
During their June Congress at the Tai Oguntayo Hall in Ado-Ekiti, the union issued a formal statement signed by Secretary Seun Ogunsakin. The group highlighted the necessity for active environmental oversight, pointing out that improper waste disposal in drainage systems significantly contributes to urban flooding. They requested that the state government actively clear obstructed waterways to allow for efficient runoff.
The NUJ also issued a firm warning against erecting structures on designated waterways, citing the severe threat this poses to public safety. Beyond environmental concerns, the congress addressed regional security, urging authorities to bolster patrols against criminal activities. Finally, the union called upon parents and educators to prioritize moral development in schools to counteract a perceived decline in student conduct.
