Karl Olutokun Toriola, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, recently shed light on the significant obstacles affecting the nation’s telecommunications sector. During a televised discussion on TVC, Toriola revealed that the frequency of fiber optic cable damage in Nigeria is startlingly high, noting that the company experiences more daily fiber cuts locally than it does in Saudi Arabia over the course of an entire year.
Toriola identified rampant vandalism and uncoordinated road construction projects as the primary drivers behind these service disruptions. These infrastructure challenges are compounded by the necessity for base stations to rely on individual power generators due to the unreliable electricity grid. This operational climate remains a major hurdle for service providers, even as the Nigerian Communications Commission continues to urge firms to enhance the quality of their offerings for subscribers.
