President Donald Trump labeled the current U.S. participation in NATO as ridiculous, describing the partnership as lopsided. Days before a summit in Ankara, he stated on Truth Social that the alliance has failed to support the U.S. in return for American efforts.
The former president has frequently criticized European allies regarding their reactions to the conflict in Iran, specifically citing limits placed on U.S. forces regarding base usage. Trump maintains that Europe should manage its own regional security, and the U.S. has already started reducing its involvement. To support his argument, he shared a chart comparing defense spending among member nations, highlighting that the U.S. contributes significantly more than many counterparts.
Previously, pressure from Trump led alliance leaders to commit to increasing defense expenditures to five percent of their GDP by 2035. The upcoming gathering on July 7-8 in Turkey will feature 32 member nations. Established in 1949, the organization has historically relied on U.S. leadership to promote European stability and counter Soviet influence.
