Locals in the Tegina District of Niger State’s Rafi Local Government Area report that over 30 individuals have died in recent fighting between the Fulani and Kamuku groups. Many victims reportedly perished in house fires ignited during the unrest, which escalated starting June 24. Thousands have been forced to leave their homes, seeking refuge in the surrounding wilderness.
Alhaji Isah Tanko Tegina, a community member, criticized government officials and traditional leaders for their inability to halt the ongoing violence. He noted that the persistent conflict destroys property and claims lives, urging immediate state intervention to restore order.
The Niger State Police Command acknowledges 18 fatalities linked to the long-standing dispute. Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun stated that military and police forces are now patrolling the area. A reconciliation committee is also attempting to mediate, while authorities continue their investigation and advise citizens against retaliatory actions.
