Proceedings in the trial of former Power Minister Olu Agunloye regarding the controversial $6 billion Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project moved forward this Thursday. A prosecution witness informed the court that two specific documents submitted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) match each other regarding official Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting minutes.
This update was shared in a report from the EFCC on July 2, 2026. During the session at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie heard testimony from Iliya John Iyakwari, the fifth witness for the prosecution. Agunloye faces seven amended charges involving corruption and the improper awarding of the $6 billion contract to Sunrise Power Transmission Company Limited.
Iyakwari, an Assistant Legal Adviser in the Power Ministry, was recalled for re-examination following earlier questions raised by defense lawyer Adeola Adedipe. During previous testimony, the defense had questioned the witness regarding differences between exhibits marked EFCC 3D and EFCC 3K. Prosecution counsel Abba Muhammed subsequently requested the witness to re-evaluate these documents.
After reviewing the records, Iyakwari confirmed to the court that both exhibits provide identical accounts of the May 21, 2003, FEC meeting. He stated that the deliberations, resolutions, and final directives recorded in both documents are verbatim. Justice Onwuegbuzie has scheduled the next phase of the trial for July 6, 2026.
