Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun State, has requested the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, to offer his royal backing and prayers for the upcoming Osun State gubernatorial election. The poll is slated for August 15, 2026.
During her visit to the palace in Ile-Ife on Thursday, Babalola emphasized that traditional leaders are essential in fostering democratic integrity and public trust. She noted that their influence is critical in discouraging electoral violence, intimidation, and hate speech. She specifically asked the monarch to urge political stakeholders, youth, and citizens to prioritize peace and civil discourse during the contest.
In response, the Ooni confirmed he is actively engaged in town hall meetings with local chiefs to advocate for high voter turnout and a peaceful process. He pledged to increase voter education efforts, specifically targeting market leaders and citizens to reject vote-buying and violence. The Ooni further charged the commission to remain impartial, follow the Electoral Act, and encouraged all candidates to accept the final results graciously.
