In the wake of student demonstrations this Tuesday regarding persistent safety concerns in areas bordering the Gidan Kwano campus, the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has unveiled new protective measures and plans for dormitory growth. Vice-Chancellor Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta explained via Capacity Media Trust Radio that the institution is actively collaborating with law enforcement and local leaders to address the threats.
Professor Kuta emphasized that the university grounds remain protected, noting that the reported crimes specifically targeted nearby settlements where a significant portion of the student body lives. Following a multi-agency security briefing involving police officials and community representatives, the administration is now integrating local vigilantes to assist the Nigeria Police Force in patrolling these residential zones.
To reduce reliance on off-campus housing, the university is accelerating efforts to provide more on-campus options. Private developers are currently working to complete 2,000 new bed spaces, with half expected to be finished this year. These additions will supplement the existing capacity of roughly 5,000 beds, with further expansion planned through a partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
