The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to picket and close down state-owned institutions in Lagos due to the government’s failure to honor the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. The affected schools include Lagos State University (LASU), the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).
During a press conference at the LASUSTECH Ikorodu campus, Lagos Zonal Chairman Prof. Adesola Nassir expressed frustration over the state government’s delay in executing the deal. He noted that despite repeated correspondence, the government has ignored the needs of academic staff, leaving them feeling undervalued and insecure.
Prof. Nassir highlighted that the 2025 agreement was finalized after eight years of negotiations involving representatives from both federal and state levels, including Pro-Chancellors. He expressed disappointment that, unlike other states that have adopted the agreement, the Lagos State government has failed to provide results after six months of engagement. He argued that a state claiming to be a ‘Centre of Excellence’ must prioritize the welfare of the educators who build its intellectual capital.
The union leader warned that staff morale is declining as their legitimate dues remain unpaid. While ASUU prefers dialogue, the union is prepared to take industrial action to protect the rights of its members and ensure the quality of higher education remains a priority. ASUU is currently aligning with other state universities across the country that are also staging walkouts to demand the implementation of the 2025 accord.
