Federal and North Central Officials Champion Gender and Child Protection Reforms

Federal and North Central officials are drafting major reforms to improve women’s economic participation and child welfare ahead of the 26th National Council on Women Affairs.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs is collaborating with North Central states to introduce policy shifts aimed at increasing female involvement in finance, technology, and politics. These initiatives also prioritize enhanced child protection and social welfare programs in anticipation of the upcoming 26th National Council on Women Affairs.

Technical experts and government officials gathered in Minna for a three-day workshop to consolidate recommendations for the national event. During the meeting, representatives emphasized the government’s dedication to economic empowerment and gender equality. Discussions centered on creating actionable strategies for sustainable livelihoods, education, and healthcare.

Hadiza Idris Kuta, the Niger State Commissioner for Women Affairs, highlighted that her state is integrating Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s agenda into federal policy. Niger State is actively promoting agribusiness support for women, better access to information technology, and stricter enforcement of child rights legislation. The administration has already appointed over 130 women to political roles and is scaling up the Nigeria for Women Project.

The assembly of delegates concluded that the focus must transition from theoretical policy drafting to practical, measurable implementation. This regional meeting serves as a precursor to the main council, ensuring that North Central priorities regarding welfare and rights are fully addressed at the national level.
