Oyo State Government Mandates Academic Catch-Up Following Orire Kidnappings

Oyo State authorities have ordered public schools to recover lost academic time following a strike over kidnappings in Orire, while emphasizing their commitment to student safety and educational quality.

The Oyo State Government has instructed public school teachers to increase their efforts to make up for instructional time lost due to a recent strike. This labor action was sparked by the kidnapping of students and staff in the Orire Local Government Area.

Segun Olayiwola, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, announced this mandate during a Thursday meeting with education stakeholders. The session included leaders from the Nigeria Union of Teachers, ANCOPSS, AOPSHON, TESCOM, and SUBEB.

Olayiwola stressed that educators must focus on effective instruction to ensure students do not suffer academically from the disruption. He reiterated that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is dedicated to maintaining high educational standards and providing a safe learning environment.

Baale Kamorudeen Aderibigbe, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, praised the teacher unions for choosing to end their strike in favor of the students’ needs. Meanwhile, union representatives urged the government to prioritize the safe return of those still held captive in Orire. Suraju Tiamiyu, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Education Intervention, confirmed that government efforts to secure the release of the victims are ongoing.
