ASUU Lagos Chapter Warns of Potential Strike Over Unmet 2025 Agreement

ASUU’s Lagos Zone has threatened to close three state-owned universities due to the government’s delay in implementing the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and unresolved internal labor issues.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has signaled that three higher education institutions in Lagos could soon face work stoppages. The union blames the Lagos State Government for failing to adopt the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, six months after it was finalized. The warning impacts Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

During a briefing held at LASUSTECH, ASUU Lagos Zonal Coordinator Adesola Nassir expressed frustration over the government’s lack of action regarding staff welfare. Nassir argued that it is contradictory for the state to pursue global academic rankings while failing to provide a stable and supportive environment for its educators. He stressed that persistent industrial tension threatens to lower academic standards, diminish staff morale, and disrupt university calendars.

Beyond the primary agreement, the union highlighted ongoing local disputes, specifically noting the termination of some ASUU members and the alleged targeting of the LASUED branch chairperson. Nassir emphasized that the responsibility for any future school closures lies with the state administration, not the union. He called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take immediate steps to finalize negotiations and fulfill the welfare commitments to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
