The federal government has initiated a significant overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), shifting away from the traditional khaki uniform in favor of locally produced Adire fabric. Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande announced that this transition aims to bolster the domestic textile industry and keep financial resources within Nigeria.
Beyond the uniform change, the reform includes a new deployment strategy that aligns postings more closely with the academic backgrounds and career goals of corps members. Graduates with education degrees, for example, will be prioritized for teaching roles after completing specialized training. To address security concerns, the government is also considering a policy that allows corps members to serve in regions they are already familiar with or where they completed their studies.
Minister Olawande clarified that the military remains an integral part of the scheme’s security structure, dismissing rumors that soldiers would be removed from the program. While the leadership structure shifts toward civilian oversight, the military will continue to provide necessary protection. Additionally, the orientation period has been extended to six weeks to place a greater focus on vocational training, entrepreneurship, and national service. These changes, approved by the Federal Executive Council, reflect President Bola Tinubu’s vision for preparing Nigerian youth for the modern workforce.
