Pape Thiaw Reflects on Senegal’s World Cup Exit Against Belgium

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw explains that his team’s defensive mindset after taking a 2-0 lead contributed to their 3-2 World Cup loss against Belgium.

Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, stated that his squad’s defeat to Belgium in the 2026 World Cup was a result of an overly cautious approach after taking an early advantage. The Teranga Lions initially established a two-goal lead in their round-of-32 match through efforts from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, only to see their momentum shift.

Belgium rallied late in the second half with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans to push the contest into extra time. Just before the match reached a penalty shootout, Rudi Garcia’s team secured a final penalty, which Tielemans scored to clinch the victory. Thiaw explained that the team became too focused on protecting their lead, which allowed Belgium to gain control. Despite the disappointment, the coach praised his players for their dedication and effort throughout the tournament.
