Aunt of rescued Venezuelan toddler promises to provide maternal care

After being trapped for six days following earthquakes in Venezuela, two-year-old Kleiber Moran is being cared for by his aunt, who remains hopeful that his parents will be found alive.

Andreína Sarmiento, a 23-year-old from Venezuela, is providing constant care to her two-year-old nephew, Kleiber Moran, after he was miraculously recovered from the wreckage of his home. Jordanian rescue teams found the toddler six days after two major earthquakes devastated the northern La Guaira state. While Kleiber escaped the catastrophe without any fractures, only sustaining minor scratches, his parents, Ana Luz and Carlos, remain missing.

Speaking from a hospital in Caracas, Andreína described the emotional reunion, noting that her nephew immediately recognized her. She has vowed to raise the boy with a mother’s affection until her sister is located. She remains hopeful that rescue workers will find her sister and brother-in-law, clinging to the belief that young Kleiber was spared for a specific purpose. As the official death toll from the earthquakes surpasses 2,000, international aid efforts continue to search for the tens of thousands still missing.
