Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele announced on Wednesday that the National Assembly is designing constitutional amendments to ensure that state governors cannot misuse future state police units. Addressing reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Bamidele acknowledged public apprehension regarding potential abuse but emphasized that the move is an essential necessity for the country. He noted that the legislature is working to incorporate specific safeguards into both the constitution and subsequent police acts.
Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji confirmed that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is aligned with the initiative. He pledged that once the constitutional amendment bill reaches state houses of assembly, it will receive rapid approval. Governor Oyebanji stated that state leaders are committed to the implementation of this security reform.
During the same briefing, Governor Oyebanji discussed his recent electoral victory in Ekiti. He expressed his intention to foster unity by collaborating with opposition candidates, having already reached out to his rivals to seek their input on governance. Looking toward the 2027 national elections, the Governor expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s standing in the state, projecting that Ekiti will deliver between 600,000 and 700,000 votes for the President based on current electoral trends and a long-term development strategy.
